The police identified a British named Jos Brechas a suspect after the biggest tests of the process of DNA in the Netherlands, including his relatives. The operation gave the police evidence of a relationship between the suspect and traces of DNA found on Nicky Verstapen’s clothing.
The suspect, formerly a member of the scout teams, is being handed over to the Netherlands.
“Jos Brech, 55, who is the suspect of the death of Nikki Verstapen, was arrested in Spain on Sunday afternoon and has been detained and will be extradited to the Netherlands,”

Nicky was in a summer camp in August 1998 when he disappeared from his tent before his body was found in a forest the next day. He was then 11 years old. Reports have indicated that Jos Brech, who had been living in a nearby area, had disappeared earlier this year, in the wake of a larger project to conduct DNA tests in the Netherlands at all.
One of the evidence in this case was the presence of a strange DNA on Nicky’s clothes.
More than 14,000 men voluntarily submitted DNA samples for investigation – none of them were suspects.
However, by comparing the samples, it was possible to determine whether a relative of the donor was involved in the incident, which narrowed the scope of the research.
He did not voluntarily make a sample of his DNA.
Investigations indicated that he had gone to the crime scene again in 1998, a few days after midnight.
The police arrested him and conducted an investigation with him later, but he was believed to be an innocent bystander.
He traveled to the Fug Mountains in eastern France last fall and was reported to have been cut off by his family in April.
He was known for his ability to remain in the wild for long periods of time.
After reporting his disappearance, the police, who examined his home, discovered that his DNA was 100 percent identical to the DNA on Nikki’s body.
The mother did not believe the police would succeed in arresting the suspect shortly after her appeal on August 22, Nikki Verstappen’s mother told Dutch television on Sunday night. “We hope there will be quick answers now to all the questions we have.”
Spanish police received a 48-year-old Dutch man who said he had seen the suspect in the village of Casteltercol, an hour’s drive north of Barcelona, and had spoken to him in July.
“He was living in a tent in the woods near a house frequented by people for years,” the man told the Telegraph newspaper.
One senior defense lawyer said he was ready to defend Jos Brech because there are traces of a DNA from other people on the victim’s body as well.
